Local families in Kenmore are calling for change at their beloved Akuna Park, arguing that a lack of basic safety fencing has turned a social space into a source of stress.

The movement gained momentum after a wave of feedback from families and pet owners highlighted how the current layout of the park is failing to keep everyone safe. Residents have raised concerns that the lack of proper barriers means dogs can bolt directly from parked vehicles into the mix, often leading to chaotic and aggressive interactions.

It is not just the pets that are at risk, as there have been multiple reports of adults and children being chased while trying to enjoy the park, making many locals hesitant to return to what was once a favourite community spot.

Beyond the immediate safety risks of the open design, many residents feel the current space is poorly suited for the diversity of dogs using it. The main point of contention is the absence of designated zones, which forces smaller, more timid dogs into the same space as larger, boisterous ones.

Community members have pointed out that this lack of separation makes it nearly impossible for owners to confidently introduce their pets to the park. The consensus among those pushing for change is that a simple redesign—including a full fence and double-gated entries—would go a long way in calming the environment and preventing unnecessary conflict between animals.

The local community is now calling on the Brisbane City Council to take a practical approach to these issues. While residents are eager for a permanent solution like fencing and separate areas for different sized dogs, they are also being realistic about the site’s limitations.

If the current location proves too difficult to secure due to flood regulations or other technical hurdles, the community has requested that the Council explore relocating the off-leash area to a different part of the park. This would ensure that the neighbourhood retains a dedicated, safe, and inclusive space for its four-legged residents and their families for years to come.
