At a time when many households are stretching every dollar at the supermarket, Brisbane West Uniting Church in Moggill is helping residents keep food on the table through a community foodbank that has been supporting locals across Brisbane’s western suburbs.

The foodbank operates from the church at 3451 Moggill Road and provides pantry staples for people experiencing hardship.

Recent posts published by the church on its official Facebook page showed shelves stocked with canned food, pasta, cereals, sauces and other non-perishable items. The church stated the pantry was available for anyone “doing it a little tough right now” and encouraged residents to either seek support or contribute donations if they were able.

Local Support Growing Around Moggill Foodbank

The initiative has also drawn support from local residents and community organisations across the Moggill and Bellbowrie area.

While the foodbank is church-operated, the service has developed into a broader neighbourhood support effort, with locals contributing shelf-stable food and basic household essentials to assist struggling families.

Church Outreach Program Has Been Running for Years

The Moggill foodbank is not a new project.

Archived community notices from MP Dr Christian Rowan show the church had already established a food relief program during the COVID-19 period in 2020. The notice described the service as community-focused emergency support for residents facing financial pressure and uncertainty during the pandemic.

On social media in 2024, Cr Greg Adermann said that food donations had been collected through his ward office and delivered to the church following a meeting with Brisbane West Uniting Church minister Rev. Rod Fisher. Mr Adermann’s post encouraged residents to contribute pantry items to help maintain supplies for people in need throughout the community.

Since then, Brisbane West Uniting Church has continued expanding its local outreach work through programs listed on its community engagement page. The church also hosts neighbourhood gatherings and support activities aimed at strengthening connections across Brisbane’s western suburbs.

According to the church’s website, Brisbane West Uniting Church was formed in 2021 following the merger of the former Moggill and Karana Downs Uniting Church congregations.

Food Relief Services Becoming More Visible in Outer Suburbs

The growing visibility of suburban foodbanks reflects the financial strain many households are facing as grocery prices, rent and utility costs continue to rise. Unlike larger warehouse-style charity operations, smaller community foodbanks often rely directly on local donations and volunteers to keep shelves stocked week to week.

Photos shared by Brisbane West Uniting Church show a range of everyday pantry items currently available, including canned vegetables, baked beans, noodles, tuna, pasta sauce and breakfast foods.
