State Crime Command’s Financial and Cyber Crime Group are currently conducting an investigation into a number of “fake trader” websites that have claimed a significant number of Queensland victims, as a result of information provided by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission through the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN).
It is alleged these websites have been established to lure victims into purchasing heavily reduced priced items, including BBQS, outboard motors, air conditioners and gym equipment in return for cash payment. Victims have paid cash expecting goods to be delivered that have never arrived.
“Firstly I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge those who have reported the matter to ACORN to allow us to investigate these matters. At this stage we have received 126 reports in relation to 27 separate websites. We anticipate somewhere in the vicinity of $110,000 has been lost so far, however we expect this figure to rise,”

Police close down $30m cold call investment fraud syndicate
Police from State Crime Command have today closed an operation in relation to an alleged $30m cold call investment fraud syndicate involving approximately 2000 victims across Australia.
The two-year operation conducted by the Financial and Cyber Crimes Group focused on a syndicate operating primarily from the Gold Coast. The investigation received significant assistance from the Australian Taxation Office and the Crime and Corruption Commission.
Today officers from the group executed search warrants on residences and businesses on the Gold Coast, and one residence and business in Brisbane. Assistance was also provided by officers from the Australian Taxation Office, Office of Fair Trading and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
Five people have been charged including four men aged in their 30’s and 40’s and a 41-year-old woman.
It is alleged the five arrested were either the principal players behind the scam or involved in the laundering of victims’ money.
The scam involved high pressure sales

Great weather for ducks, but not for driving
The sound of rain on the roof prompts me to write my first (hopefully of many) myPolice blogs for Bayside.
With rainy weather affecting our city at present, a timely reminder of the dangers of wet and flooded roads is warranted.
Paramount is the notion “If it’s flooded, forget it” volumes have been spoken, and it’s all too often that I see people engaging in risky behaviour by trying to cross a flooded road. Please think about what you cannot see beneath the surface. A hidden ‘meter deep’ washout might be waiting to swallow unsuspecting cars and their operators.
So how does rainy weather affect our road network and vehicles?
Firstly, rainy weather increases the number of cars on the road. People are more reluctant to use public transport if it means waiting for the bus or train, getting wet in the process. People will opt for private transport instead and as a result,
