This morning as part of Queensland Road Safety Week, Indooroopilly Road Policing Unit undertook an operation with a difference. We spoke with the drivers of vehicles that were identified as having a minor defect such as non functional brake lights or indicators.
When we stopped drivers we were able to provide them with a voucher from a major automotive retailer as an incentive to quickly replace the broken globes. Whilst some might think that broken bulbs are only a minor defect, in my experience broken indicators/brake lights can contribute towards traffic crashes.
We handed out over 20 vouchers and had a great response from drivers that we spoke with and the majority were very happy to accept our offer of a voucher to assist them toward the cost of replacement bulbs.
As part of Queensland Road Safety Week, can I ask that everyone check their brake lights and indicators to ensure they are all

Police kick of Road Safety Week with operation in The Gap
Today as part of Queensland Road Safety Week 2017, staff from Indooroopilly Road Policing Unit and The Gap Division combined to undertake an operation within The Gap Division generally.
We were focusing on drivers that are in excess of prescribed alcohol limits or have drugs present in their system whilst driving.
We utilised a number of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) vehicles which are very effective and a useful tool in our role as they quickly identify vehicles that are unregistered/uninsured and persons that are wanted.
We used the local knowledge of The Gap staff combined with the specialist knowledge and equipment that Road Policing Units possess, to conduct a number of drug and alcohol tests.
We detected one driver who returned an alleged positive reading of the presence of drugs within their system. The driver was issued a Notice to Appear for driving with a relevant drug present in saliva and is to appear
Operation Papa Newfoundland 3
Operation Papa Newfoundland 3 was a combined operation utilising staff from state and local traffic units, Drug Detection dogs, officers from the Centenary and Inner West Patrol Groups and the Queensland Department of Transport Vehicle Inspectors to close down a lane of the Centenary Motorway with a focus on driver safety, vehicle road worthiness and to deter drug and drink driving.
Overall, the operation was successful with quantities of drugs being seized and charges laid with regards to drink and drug driving, unlicensed driving, drug supply, drug possession and other offences.
A number of vehicles were also defected due to mechanical issues.
The Drug Detector police dog had a 100% success rate in detection and the overall sentiment from the public was positive towards the activity by police.

R U in Control? campaign targets fraud
Today Commissioner Ian Stewart announced the R U in Control? campaign, aimed at empowering Queenslanders and helping them avoid becoming a victim of cyber and financial crime.
The Commissioner said it had been estimated that organised crime costs the Australian economy $21 billion per year with $8.5 billion of that figure directly related to cyber, identity and corporate crime.
“While police and other agencies work to prevent these crimes and apprehend those who target vulnerable Queenslanders, it is important we fight this battle as a united front and take the control back from these fraudsters and scammers,” Commissioner Stewart said.
“Too many Queensland businesses and individuals are being targeted by criminals stealing data for use in other crimes or holding businesses to ransom for large sums of money.
“We are also seeing vulnerable Queenslanders targeted daily with cold call investment scams, malicious emails and fake website scams,” Commissioner Stewart said.

More than just a game
On Saturday, August 12, the Queensland Police Rugby League Association hosted a charity rugby league game to help raise money for the Brett Forte Remembrance Fund.
At 5pm the siren sounded at Carina Football Stadium where 3,500 people came to their feet and cheered on the QPS Dream Team who were lead onto the paddock by Brett Forte’s youngest son, Samuel Forte, and the QPS All Stars Team who were lead out by older brother, Brodie Forte.
Brodie’s coin toss saw the winning call come from the Dream Team Captain, Senior Constable Hayden Lea.
The crowd remained on their feet for a minute silence with Suzie Forte joining the boys on the field.
The refs blew their whistle and the game was underway in earnest.
The Dream Team were directed around the paddock by Queensland legend Scott Prince and scored the first try.

Turning the screws on crime, Arana Hills
Help us turn the screws on number plate thefts by taking the opportunity to have tamper proof screws fitted to your plates.
Taking this simple step helps not only reduce the theft of number plates but also reduces the incidence of flow on offences where false number plates are used. These offences can include petrol drive offs, break and enters, traffic offences and armed robberies.
Having one-way screws on your car’s registration plates is especially encouraged if you regularly park your vehicle in shopping centres, train stations or leave your vehicle parked in the street.
Our next one-way screws event is happening next week:
When:
Wednesday, August 23 from 9am to 12pm
Where:
Arana Hills PCYC, 135a Olearia Street West, Everton Hills (in the car park)
Police will remove your number plates and re-attach them with one-way screws so the plates can only then be removed with a special ‘un-do-it’ tool.
There is no cost to you to have the screws placed onto
