Electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly common sight on Brisbane roads, but some suburbs are embracing the technology much faster than others.

Among the city’s strongest adopters are several suburbs in Brisbane’s western fringe, including Kenmore Hills, Upper Brookfield, Fig Tree Pocket, and Pullenvale. These leafy communities have emerged as some of Brisbane’s strongest EV-adopting suburbs, reflecting broader trends linked to household income and housing characteristics.

While Brisbane’s CBD records a large share of Queensland’s electric vehicle registrations, researchers highlighted that the figures from the Transport and Main Roads Department are heavily influenced by company-owned vehicles registered to corporate addresses. Looking beyond commercial fleets reveals strong uptake in affluent suburban areas.

For residents in suburbs such as Kenmore Hills and Pullenvale, electric vehicles are increasingly becoming a practical transport option.

Why western suburbs are embracing EVs

Researchers point to several factors behind the popularity of EVs in Brisbane’s western suburbs.

One of the most significant is affordability. While electric vehicles have become more accessible in recent years, they still generally carry a higher upfront cost than many comparable petrol vehicles. As a result, households with higher incomes are often better positioned to make the switch.

Housing also plays a major role. Researchers note that garages and off-street parking are more common in some suburbs further from the city, making home charging easier. This can make electric vehicle ownership more practical for residents.

The combination of housing characteristics and household income appears to support stronger EV uptake in a number of Brisbane’s outer suburban areas.

For some households, long-term savings are becoming an increasingly attractive part of the equation. One Brisbane EV owner reported saving hundreds of dollars each month on fuel costs after switching from a petrol vehicle and charging primarily through rooftop solar.

The growing range of available models has also helped boost interest. The market now includes more EV options across a wider range of price points than in previous years, giving consumers more choice than ever before.

A city divided by income and infrastructure

The pattern of EV ownership across Brisbane also highlights a broader socioeconomic divide.

While affluent suburbs have embraced battery-powered vehicles at a faster rate, many other parts of the city continue to lag behind. Researchers say concerns about vehicle costs, charging infrastructure and driving range remain barriers for some households.

As a result, many drivers are opting for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles as a stepping stone toward full electrification. In several Brisbane suburbs, hybrids continue to outnumber fully electric vehicles, reflecting a preference for reducing fuel consumption without completely relying on battery charging.

Access to charging infrastructure and housing characteristics continue to influence whether residents feel comfortable making the switch.

Even so, electric vehicle sales continue to grow nationally. Industry observers have described the arrival of large shipments of EVs into Australia as a significant milestone for the sector, while manufacturers continue to introduce new models across a wider range of market segments.

For suburbs such as Kenmore Hills, Upper Brookfield, Fig Tree Pocket and Pullenvale, that shift is already well underway. What was once considered an emerging technology is becoming an increasingly familiar presence in local driveways and on suburban streets.
