A police road safety operation focusing on motorists with fake registration plates and unregistered vehicles has launched across Queensland today.
The three-month operation code named Operation Quebec Yield will also involve officers targeting drivers for red light, mobile phone and seat belt offences.
Road Policing Command Superintendent David Johnson said police had recently noticed an increase in the number of fake or cloned number plates on Queensland roads.
“We know those with false number plates are more likely to commit traffic offences and other criminal offences which puts our community at risk,” Superintendent Johnson said.
“Police use registration plates to trace stolen vehicles and vehicles involved in crime and life-endangering traffic offences such as disobeying red lights and speeding.”
Superintendent Johnson said motorists without proper vehicle registration are also not paying their fair share as a road user.

This was also an opportunity to celebrate 26 years of partnership between the police and the community.

Turning the screws on crime, Brookside Shopping Centre.
Police and Brookside Shopping Centre are joining forces to help prevent number plate theft.
Help us turn the screws on number plate thefts by taking the opportunity to have one-way screws fitted to your plates.
Taking this simple step not only helps to reduce the theft of number plates, but also reduces the incidences that follow on from this theft.
These offences can include petrol drive offs, break and enters, traffic offences and armed robberies.
Having one-way screws on your car’s registration plates is encouraged if you regularly park your vehicle in shopping centres, train stations or leave your vehicle parked in the street.
We have some upcoming one-way screws events happening this week:
When: Wednesday November 14, 8.45am – 11.30am.
Where: 159 Osborne Road, Mitchelton (Carpark – ‘East basement’)
Cost: FREE!
Police will remove your number plates and re-attach them with one-way screws on the day.
Please see the below map for our location on the day.
Police operations reducing road trauma within the Inner West
On October 17, Police from the Inner West Patrol Group continued their series of partnership operations with Road Policing Command, State Penalties Enforcement Unit (SPER) and Transport and Main Roads Inspectors in reducing road trauma within the Inner West.
Inner West Patrol Group Leaders in Partnership Policing
The operation was conducted over a three-hour period at Ashgrove Avenue, Ashgrove, targeting drink and drug driving and defective vehicle offences.
During the operation a total of 346 vehicles were inspected, with the following results:
Seven persons were charged on 9 matters relating to drug possession and licence related offences.
Total of 346 RBTs and 10 Random Drug Tests were conducted.
25 vehicle defects and 12 other Infringement Notices were issued by Transport Inspectors and Road Policing Command Officers.

Officers of the SPER assisted the motoring public with identifying and managing payment plans for outstanding fines, which if left un-serviced, may have led to
Inner West police come to rescue of ‘Lorrie’ the Rainbow Lorikeet
Poor old Lorrie when first found by police
During the conduct of their recent traffic operation on October 17, Inner West Police Officers located an injured baby Rainbow Lorikeet, whom they affectionately named Lorrie.
Lorrie the Lorikeet was found in a distressed and dishevelled state and appeared to have fallen from his nest during the recent inclement weather.
Police attempted to locate Lorrie’s mum and nest in order to reunite them.
However, this proved to be unsuccessful.
Police then took Lorrie into their care and transported him to the nearest place of safety: the caring staff from the Ashgrove Avenue Veterinary Clinic.
After a thorough check-up and a bite to eat, Lorrie was handed over to a wildlife carer for further care.
Not only did Inner West Police reduce road trauma during the conduct of their operation, but they also reduced the chances of us losing another one of our treasured feathered friends.

On Friday, October 26, the students Ferny Grove State School, led by their Adopt-A-Cop Senior Constable Wanda Bennett, took part in a ‘Walk For Daniel’ along McGinn Road.
Ferny Grove State School has undertaken this march annually for nine years as part of Day For Daniel, in memory of Daniel Morcombe who was tragically killed 15 years ago.
The Day For Daniel also offers a chance to raise awareness about child safety, and protective behaviours for children.

All dressed in red, hundreds of students walked down the closed-off street with their teachers, a police escort and QFES representatives driving their fire engine behind.
They were greeted (with many high-fives) by the students of Ferny Grove State High School, who had also decorated the fence with red balloons and signs remembering Daniel Morcombe.
In the High School’s multi-purpose hall, students heard speeches by QPS
