Transport Works Advance Across Fig Tree Pocket as School Bus Stop Remains Uncovered

Road-safety and active-travel works have continued across Fig Tree Pocket in recent years, while Fig Tree Pocket State School has also featured in several transport programs. One gap remains outside the school, where the bus stop still has no shelter and does not appear in currently published bus-stop upgrade projects.

New Pedestrian Works Completed on Cubberla Street

Council completed pedestrian improvements at the intersection of Cubberla Street and Jesmond Road in June 2026. The project added a pedestrian island and kerb build-out, a new section of footpath, improved lighting, line marking and drainage works. Council said the changes were intended to improve pedestrian crossing safety and visibility between people crossing the road and approaching traffic.

Separate works were also completed in 2026 at the Kenmore Road, Norman Street and Robertson Place roundabout in Fig Tree Pocket. Improvements included pedestrian islands, kerb ramps and build-outs, bicycle connections, footpath works and new line marking as part of Council’s Suburban Corridor Modernisation program.

School Has Featured in Several Safety Programs

Fig Tree Pocket State School appeared in Council’s 2024–25 Suburban Works Program under Safe School Travel Infrastructure.

Council records also list a Speed Awareness Monitor on Cubberla Street at Fig Tree Pocket State School for 2023–24, facing westbound traffic. The devices form part of Council’s school speed-awareness program and display vehicle speeds to approaching motorists.

The school joined Council’s Active School Travel program in 2025. The initiative encourages walking, cycling, public transport and other alternatives to private-car trips and provides participating schools with road-safety and travel-planning support.

State Funding Proposal Did Not Reach Nomination

Fig Tree Pocket State School also entered Queensland’s School Transport Infrastructure Program process between July 2025 and April 2026.

Queensland Parliament records show the school was among those with an idea or expression of interest submitted to the program. Yet, it did not appear among the 48 formal Tranche Nine nominations covering 51 schools.

Under the program, Transport and Main Roads conducts a Safe School Travel investigation after an idea is submitted. The responsible asset owner can then investigate the proposal and submit a formal nomination if the project is considered feasible.

Shelter Not Listed in Current Upgrade Program

Brisbane City Council separately operates a rolling Bus Stop Upgrade Program covering access paths, boarding points, waiting areas, seating and shelters. Current works are listed in Stafford, Taigum, Upper Mount Gravatt and Windsor.

Despite the wider transport and safety works delivered across Fig Tree Pocket, the bus stop outside Fig Tree Pocket State School remains without a shelter. No current state or Brisbane City Council project identifies when one will be installed.
