The assistance is available for uninsured residents who experienced property damage and disruptions to essential services following the severe weather event. Alongside Mount Crosby, the 15 suburbs included in the assistance program are Ashgrove, Bardon, Boondall, Ferny Grove, Gumdale, Keperra, Lota, Manly, Manly West, Ransome, The Gap, Wakerley, Wynnum, and Wynnum West.

The assistance package is designed to help cover recovery costs and support residents in returning their homes to safe and habitable conditions.

Three assistance measures are available to eligible residents:

  • Structural Assistance Grants – up to $80,000 for uninsured, income-tested owner-occupiers towards the repair or replacement of a disaster-damaged dwelling to return it to a safe and habitable condition.
  • Essential Household Contents Grants – income-tested assistance for uninsured residents, up to $1,765 for individuals and up to $5,300 for couples or families to replace destroyed essential household contents such as whitegoods.
  • Essential Services Safety and Reconnection Scheme – income-tested grants up to $5,000 per household for uninsured homeowners needing to reconnect services like electricity, gas, water or sewerage.

Residents can apply for these grants to assist with rebuilding and replacing damaged property. Eligibility for the grants is income-tested, and applicants must be uninsured and able to demonstrate damage caused by the hailstorms.

Information about eligibility requirements, supporting documents, and how to apply is available through the Queensland disaster recovery website. Assistance is also available via the 24/7 Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349, where residents can speak with staff about available support options.

Colleges Crossing Closure Expected Due to Potential Flooding: Warning Issued for Kenmore and Surrounding Suburbs

Residents of Kenmore and surrounding suburbs should be aware of potential disruptions as persistent rainfall and dam releases threaten to inundate Colleges Crossing.

Seqwater’s Flood Operations Centre was mobilised at 9 a.m. on Thursday, 2 January 2025, in response to persistent rainfall in the Wivenhoe and Somerset Dam catchments. Low-flow flood releases from Wivenhoe Dam, combined with river and creek flows downstream, caused water to rise over crossings, including Twin Bridges and Savages Crossing, by late Thursday.

By Friday morning, Colleges Crossing was fully inundated, rendering Mount Crosby Road impassable. The Bureau of Meteorology had forecast additional showers and thunderstorms, further complicating conditions for the region.

A Bridge Under Threat

Colleges Crossing is a low-level bridge over the Brisbane River at Chuwar in Ipswich. Opened in 1894 to replace a flood-damaged structure, it holds a significant place in local history. However, its low-level design makes it highly vulnerable to flooding—a challenge familiar to both residents and commuters in the area.

Colleges Crossing, which is traversed by Mount Crosby Road, becomes impassable during major floods or water releases from Wivenhoe Dam.

Impact on Kenmore Residents

For Kenmore locals who rely on Mount Crosby Road for travel to Ipswich or surrounding areas, this closure serves as a reminder of the importance of planning alternate routes. The flooding could also disrupt recreational visits, as Colleges Crossing is a popular spot for picnics and outdoor activities.

Community Preparedness

Residents are urged to monitor updates from Seqwater and the Bureau of Meteorology closely. Travelers should exercise caution and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads.

Colleges Crossing is not just a vital transport link; it’s a bridge steeped in local history. As nature once again asserts its dominance, Kenmore residents and others in the region are reminded of the Brisbane River’s power and the importance of resilience in the face of such challenges.

Petition for Full Bus Services for Western Areas of Pullenvale Ward Launched

A petition has recently been launched, calling for full bus services covering Karana Downs, Mount Crosby, Lake Manchester, Anstead, and the surrounding areas through a contracted delivery arrangement.

The petition has so far gathered 1,499 signatures and support is growing. State funding support for the proposed public transport services to western areas of Pullenvale Ward is also being sought from various sectors.

“Queensland residents draw to the attention to the House, that there are currently no contracted bus services provided by the State Government to the suburbs of Karana Downs, Mount Crosby, Lake Manchester, Kholo, Anstead and surrounding areas, within the Brisbane Local Government Area,” the petition said.

“Your petitioners, therefore, request the extension of the State Government’s service area for contracted public transport, and provide dedicated state funding for such bus services in these suburbs, with the contracted delivery to be undertaken by Brisbane City Council.”

Councillor Greg Adermann said that due to the lack of bus services in these areas, Council has resorted to providing Personalised Public Transport (PPT) services instead. These Black and White maxi-taxi services provide residents with a low-cost means of transportation in areas where Translink services are limited including Karana Downs and Mount Crosby.

“If we can convince the Queensland Government to support this, it will enable Brisbane City Council to be contracted to deliver such bus services to your suburb,” Councillor Aderman explained.

The online petition closes on 3 November 2022. To sign the petition, click the link here.
