The memorial bench was dedicated on September 9, with members of Allison’s family and the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation attending the dedication. The choice of location has a direct connection to Allison and her family. Allison lived at Brookfield and often brought her three daughters to Rafting Ground Park to relax and play, according to information shared by the Foundation.

The Foundation said the reserve was also a place where Allison and her daughters shared happy times, including birthdays and other special occasions.

The new seat differs from the standard park furniture, with a unique design and yellow finish. Yellow was chosen because it was Allison’s favourite colour and has become closely associated with the Foundation’s work in her memory.

The Foundation’s Strive To Be Kind Day is held in Allison’s memory and promotes kindness, respect and safe relationships. Yellow also features in activities associated with the initiative.

A plaque on the bench commemorates women who have lost their lives to domestic violence. It also includes a call to action for people who need help, or know someone who does, directing them to DVConnect Womensline on 1800 811 811.

DVConnect Womensline provides crisis counselling, safety planning, information, referrals and other support for people experiencing domestic and family violence. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People in immediate danger are advised to call Triple Zero (000).

The memorial forms part of the wider work of the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation, which promotes awareness of domestic and family violence and supports education around issues including coercive control.

For the Foundation, the bench is intended as a place to rest, reflect, and remember. It also hopes the space can provide a setting where difficult conversations about domestic and family violence can begin.

The dedication was supported by the Kenmore, Toowong, and Brookfield Rotary clubs. Cr Greg Adermann said the clubs have been involved in initiatives supporting people affected by domestic violence and thanked Rotary members who provided morning tea for guests at the event.

The Foundation also acknowledged Cr Adermann, Jennifer Underhill, and the Rotary Club of Kenmore for their contributions to the project.

The Foundation said it hopes people who use the bench will pause, appreciate the people they love and cherish the moments that matter.

At Rafting Ground Park, the yellow bench now marks a place already connected with Allison and her family’s memories, while providing a visible reminder of the Foundation’s message about remembrance, awareness and domestic and family violence.
