A 400-metre section of the Centenary Bikeway at Fig Tree Pocket will receive new lighting, extending illumination along a key western cycling connection.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads will install lighting from about 100 metres north of the Kenmore Road Bridge, continuing north for around 400 metres towards existing lighting near Musgrave Street.
Night works to run through spring
Construction is scheduled to begin in late September 2026 and finish by mid-December, subject to weather and construction conditions.
Most work will take place between 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., Monday to Thursday, with some Sunday or other out-of-hours work possible.
Works will include ground and conduit excavation and the installation of lighting poles on existing barrier structures. Residents, businesses and bikeway users near the site may experience temporary noise, dust and minor delays, with traffic control used where required.

Lighting has been added in stages
The Fig Tree Pocket section of the bikeway has received lighting upgrades over several years.
In 2019, new lights were switched on at several locations along the western route, including the Fig Tree Pocket Road approach, the Witton Road S-bend and the turn-off to Cliveden Park. Earlier Centenary Bikeway lighting works
Further work began in 2022, when TMR started installing lighting between the Fig Tree Pocket Road crossing and Musgrave Street. Cycling advocates had identified the section as particularly dark for evening riders.
The 2026 project will extend the lit section to within about 100 metres north of the Kenmore Road Bridge.
Fig Tree Pocket links riders to Kenmore and beyond
The bikeway through Fig Tree Pocket forms part of a broader western cycling corridor. Brisbane City Council describes the Western Freeway Bikeway as connecting with the Centenary Cycleway to create a dedicated route between Toowong and Ellen Grove. The corridor also links with the Bicentennial Bikeway at Toowong.
A 2023 submission from Brisbane West BUG and Bicycle Queensland identified the Fig Tree Pocket Road connection as an important link between the Centenary Cycleway and Kenmore, with routes continuing towards local schools and Kenmore Village.
Recent road works have also added cycling infrastructure around Kenmore Road. Council’s completed corridor modernisation project included a bike off-ramp on Kenmore Road and a bike on-ramp on Norman Street at the Kenmore Road, Norman Street and Robertson Place roundabout in Fig Tree Pocket.
