On Tuesday, July 18, a memorial service was held at the Ferny Grove Police Station to commemorated the 10th anniversary of the tragic loss in the line of duty of Constable Brett Andrew Irwin registered number 4020316 of the Ferny Grove Police Station.
At approximately at 10.50pm on July 18, 2007, Constable Brett Irwin and his shift partner attended a residential address in Keperra to execute an arrest warrant on an adult male who had failed to appear in court.
As Constable Irwin approached the rear door of the address, he was shot and fatally wounded by the man wanted on the warrant. Unknown to Constable Irwin or his partner, the wanted man and an acquaintance had robbed a motel in Kippa-Ring, at gunpoint about 7.20pm that same night in order to steal cash for drugs.

Mt Zero campaign takes on Mt Coot-tha
Police from the Inner West Patrol Group are conducted the Mt Zero campaign on the weekend. It all started up at Mt Coot-tha on Saturday morning with police spreading road safety messages to road users that visited.
The Mt Zero campaign was created to raise awareness of the dangers on roads in Mt Coot-tha, Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious Roads and the aim of the campaign is to reduce accidents and fatalities on these mountain roads.
Common factors contributing to accidents on these roads were speed, lack of rider experience, driver error, poor visibility and collision with other vehicles.
We appeal for all road users to slow down on mountain roads and drive to the ever changing conditions by taking extra care when driving and riding.
Winter can bring high winds and the road surface can become slippery due to morning and evening dew and sun light fades quicker.

Update: Prolific property offender, Brisbane
Detectives are continuing to appeal for public assistance to locate a man who may be able to assist with investigations into a large and increasing number of property offences in the Brisbane area.
Mitchell Connor, 31, is believed to be in possession of a handgun and police are urging members of the public NOT to approach him.
Since police last launched a public appeal to locate the man on June 15, up to 40 additional offences have occurred which are believed to be linked.
Since April 2017 a large amount of vehicles and personal property have been stolen from secure carparks and garages in numerous areas spanning from Brisbane’s north to the Gold Coast, including Norman Park, New Farm, Albion, Coorparoo, Eight Mile Plains and Southport.
Police have released new CCTV vision of a man they wish to speak with in relation to the offences.

Drugs charges and seizures, Brisbane
Detectives from the Brisbane City Criminal Investigation Branch have charged a total of 27 people with 109 drug related offences following a four-month investigation targeting the importation and trafficking of dangerous drugs.
The investigation culminated with a number of search warrants being executed in the North Brisbane and Petrie areas this morning.
Throughout the operation police seized MDMA pills and powder, cannabis, cocaine, LSD, cash and property worth a substantial amount of money.
A 21-year-old Lawnton man has been charged with a number of drug related offences including importing commercial quantities of border controlled drugs, seven counts of possessing dangerous drugs, two counts of supplying dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of crime.
He is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (July 28).
Detective Inspector Glen Farmer said the operation had been a great success, resulting in the removal of dangerous drugs from the local community.

QPS Officers receive bravery awards from the Royal Humane Society of Australasia
A number of officers from the Queensland Police Service attended an award ceremony to receive bravery awards from the Royal Humane Society of Australasia on Friday, July 21.
The awards; seven silver medals, 14 bronze medals, and eight certificates of merit, were presented to QPS officers by The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor Graham Quirk.
The Royal Humane Society of Australasia, formed in 1874, publicly recognises acts of bravery by making awards to those who risk their own lives to save the lives of others. More than 8,450 awards have been made in the Society’s 142 years’ history.

Doors are locked but what about your windows?
Inner West police are continually reminding residents to lock their doors and key lock screen doors, but they also want to remind you not to forget to check your windows too.
Police do not suggest that you lock yourself in, just ensure there is sufficient airflow but be aware of window security.
Louvres
Louvres are a common entry point for offenders as they are hard to secure and the individual blades are easily removed.
Research your security options to secure louvred windows.
Make use of sensor lights and review the accessibility of your residence by unwanted persons.
Check your gardens and make sure your shrubbery doesn’t provide a cover for offenders in front of windows.
Pet doors
If they are large enough that a small person is able to fit through, make sure they able to be secured from inside.
Check that you are not able to reach door locks through your pet doors.

Thieves are targetting the following:

Following these few simple steps might just save you the heartache and headaches associated with property theft, vehicle theft and home burglaries:
Ensure that your vehicle is locked and that valuables are removed EVERY time you leave your car;
Ensure that your home is locked; and
Hide your car keys at home.

What can you do as a home owner or business owner to improve your security?
There are many tools available to you that can be used to protect your home or business. Some of these could be simple changes made in and around your dwelling/premises, for example:
Keeping your garden and shrubs trimmed to increase visibility;
Installing timer lights to your business after hours to light up the inside of the premises when you are not there; and
Moving the garbage bin from under the stairs of a high-set house and replacing it elsewhere in your yard (so that would-be thieves cant use the bin as a ladder to gain entry to your home).
The list is endless, and of those just mentioned most would only cost you time and no money to make little changes.

Update: Rape charges, Brisbane
Detectives from the Brisbane Inner West Child Protection and Investigation Unit have laid additional charges following investigations into the alleged rape of women using a ride sharing service in the Brisbane and Ipswich areas.
Police will allege around 11.30pm on September 4, 2015, a teenage woman was raped while using the ride sharing service in Ipswich.
A 47-year-old man who was charged earlier this month as part of ongoing investigations has been charged with additional offences of one count each of rape and deprivation of liberty.
He will appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 31.
Detectives believe there could be other victims and are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have been assaulted in similar circumstances to report the matter to police.
