Keep the drones at home when visiting this year’s Ekka

Police wish to provide the following advice from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on the recreational use of drones/remotely piloted aircraft in/over Ekka grounds:

No night flying;
No flying over people;
No flying closer than 30m to people laterally;
No flying within 500 meters of a helicopter landing site;
No flying above 400FT at the Ekka as this is a controlled airspace;
No flying beyond visual line of sight – this means the ability to locate, orientate and navigate with the naked eye (no FPV); and
No flying in a manner which could be deemed unsafe or hazardous to people, property or other airspace users.

If a drone is spotted, police will be tasked to locate the owner and their details will be taken and provided to CASA for further investigation.
For more information about flying drones/remotely piloted aircraft, visit the CASA website here: www.casa.gov.au/aircraft/landing-page/flying-drones-australia, or head to our ‘Technology in the sky’ display in the Queensland Government

Keeping kids safe at the Ekka

The first day at the Ekka proved to be the perfect start, sunny without a cloud to be seen and the smell of the hot and tasty dagwood dogs.
Police and volunteers got to meet families and school groups at the Ekka Police Station on Gregory Terrace and the RACQ Animal Nursery marquee providing free wristbands for children.
Look for the police and sign on Gregory Terrace
Police request that parents attend either of the “Keep kids safe” sites at the Ekka to collect a free wristband with the parent’s mobile numbers on the inside, just in case their little one wandered off in the crowd.
While collecting your wristbands police can help to teach the children how to identified a police officer and how to find them if the child becomes lost.
Parents please take a photo of your child on your mobile phone on the day so that we are able

Music returns to Ironside State School

Back in June this year Ironside State School, in Saint Lucia, was broken into and eight musical instruments were stolen, mainly cellos and double basses.
A teacher from the school spotted an advertisement on an online classifieds website a few weeks later with these instruments listed for sale. They were able to identify the instruments by the markings on them.
The teacher contacted the seller and was able to obtain details including their address and phone number. The teacher then passed this information onto Indooroopilly Police and a search of the address was conducted that same day.

Five of the instruments were recovered, but three are still outstanding (believed to have been sold already via that online classifieds website).
An 18-year-old man was arrested for the break and enter of the school, fraud and drug offences after police allegedly located dangerous drugs, drug utensils and steroids at the dwelling.  He will appear in the

Helping victims of domestic and family violence stay warm this winter

Every August, the Inner West Patrol Group Domestic and Family Violence Coordinator Sergeant Roger O’Malia joins together with Moira Flynn of the Ashgrove Ladies Quilting Circle to donate some magnificent hand crafted quilts to the Windanah domestic violence refuge.
“We started doing this about eight years ago when I found out that some of the children at the refuge were cold at night as they didn’t have warm blankets,” Sergeant O’Malia said.
“It was then Moira kindly volunteered the service of the quilters!”
This year Sergeant O’Malia and Moira donated over 40 quilts and blankets to the refuge.

Police issue free wristbands for child safety at the Ekka

Police Minister Mark Ryan and North Brisbane District Superintendent Katherine Innes are urging parents and carers to avoid losing children at the Ekka by collecting free wristbands and organising a meeting point should they become separated.
Superintendent Innes said the initiative had been a proven success for many years, ensuring that lost children at the Ekka were quickly reunited with their parents or caregivers. 44 children were successfully reunited with their parents in 2016.
“Police encourage parents to know where their children are at all times,” Superintendent Innes said.
“On arrival at the Ekka, parents should show their children where the police station is, teach them how to identify a police officer, and explain that they need to find a police officer if they become lost.
“We suggest taking a photo of your child on the day so that we know what the child is wearing and charge your mobile phone so the police

Police close drug trafficking operation

Detectives from the Northern Major and Organised Crime Squad (MOCS) have closed an operation targeting the suspected trafficking of illicit drugs.
Operation Papa Orthograde began in March this year and identified a number of people allegedly involved in a drug trafficking syndicate operating between Townsville and South East Queensland.
Over the past two days, officers from the Townsville Tactical Crime Squad, Northern MOCS and Brisbane’s Drug and Serious Crime Group finalised the operation, which saw 32 people charged with 151 drug-related offences.
Drugs with a street value in excess of $1million were seized and included Ice, MDMA, cocaine and cannabis.
During the investigation police also seized a quantity of cash and weapons.
All of those charged will appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court over the next month.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Walker of the Northern Major and Organised Crime Squad said officers will continue to target those engaging in criminal activity in Queensland.
“The actions this week

Safety when lane filtering

Recently I attended at a traffic crash where a motorcyclist that was lane filtering collided with a vehicle that was turning right. The rider sustained injuries which necessitated transport to hospital and there was significant damage to his motorcycle.
Lane filtering is legal in Queensland as long as certain conditions are complied with. As a motorcyclist myself, it’s my experience that motorcyclists are at greatest risk at intersections and driveways, or entrances and exits to premises, as drivers are turning in and out of these areas.
At intersections, drivers often leave space for vehicles to turn in to premises or driveways, however this poses a risk for a motorcyclists that are lane filtering if they do not have clear vision.
When lane filtering, motorcyclists are urged to pay greater attention and proceed with greater caution at these areas as your vision to either side is limited as is the vision of other drivers wishing
