Operation Sierra Cold Snap targets school holiday road trips

Commissioner Katarina Carroll joined Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus today for the official launch of school holiday road safety campaign, Operation Sierra Cold Snap.
Between Saturday June 27 and Friday July 17, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) will coordinate the state-wide road safety operation with the aim of stopping lives lost and serious traffic crashes and improving road safety over the busy school holiday period and into the first week of returning to school.

Commissioner Carroll said with COVID-19 restrictions easing, Queenslanders would be out exploring their state these holidays, but it was important they travelled safely.
“We are in a unique situation where families will be taking advantage of being able to travel further away from home for the school holidays and we expect traffic to increase significantly on our road network,” Commissioner Carroll said.

He wheel-y shouldn’t have done that

Officers from Bellbowrie Police Beat weren’t exactly stoked when they came across a modified scooter while they were conducting patrols around Kenmore Hills recently.
Do not try this at home or anywhere – it’s very dangerous and looks terrible
On the morning of Thursday, June 18, Senior Constable Chris Tetley was astounded to observe a man on a scooter towing half a bicycle on the roadway.
When questioned, the rider allegedly stated that he intended on towing his push bike to nearby shops to have it repaired. The man allegedly admitted that he knew it wasn’t a safe or a good idea.
The man was issued with a traffic infringement notice of $133 for the offence and had to re-tyre his modified scooter.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Being alert to elder abuse in our communities is always important.
Research shows family violence often increases during major crises and disruptions, which means some older Queenslanders may be at increased risk of abuse at this time during the COVID pandemic.
Social and physical isolation, or shared living spaces with a person who may behave abusively, could heighten the risks.

Elder abuse is a single or repeated act — of lack of appropriate action — occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.
Did you know that most cases of elder abuse occur within family relationships?
Elder abuse can be perpetrated in various forms — physical, emotional/psychological, financial, sexual abuse, or neglect.
Now is a time when we need to look out for each other, particularly those who are most vulnerable.
If you suspect that an older person you
