On Sunday August 5, police from the Inner West Crime Prevention Unit participated in the University of Queensland 2018 Open Day at the St Lucia Campus.
The police stand provided the opportunity for current and prospective university students to speak to police about careers within the Queensland Police Service, recruiting/entry requirements and police life in general.
The police display was collocated with representatives from the UQ Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty.
This proved to be beneficial and convenient for students wishing to undertake tertiary studies in this area and ascertain how these studies would be beneficial for them pursuing a career within policing.
Inner West Police look forward to continuing their partnership with the University of Queensland and supporting their future Market and Open Days.

Moggill community run wild at their Mogganza carnival police display
Junior member of the community enjoying his interaction with police
On Saturday, August 4, police from the Inner West Patrol Group attended the Moggill State Primary School annual ‘Mogganza’ carnival to provide a static police display and conduct proactive community engagement activities at this very popular community event.
The police display proved to be a popular attraction with both children and adults attending the carnival.
The police display gave younger community members an opportunity to positively interact with their local police, and to experience police uniforms, equipment and vehicles first hand.
It also gave adult members of the community, a chance to speak with their local police about crime trends, crime prevention measures and road related traffic topics.
One of the most popular police attractions on the day, was the Lidar radar speed check.
The speed check gave its participants (both young and old) the opportunity to check out their awesome athletic prowess, by recording how fast they could run in a straight line over 25 meters.
Inner West Police look forward to supporting and participating in next year’s Mogganza.
Children in the hot seat at The Gap School fete
On Saturday, August 4, The Gap State School was fortunate enough to have a visit from the police at their school fete.
The police brought with them their police car and police uniforms which the kids loved taking turns in trying on and sitting in the drivers seat with the red and blues flashing above.
Police officers spoke to the children about what it is like being a police officer, how to contact police in a emergency and personal safety.
The police would like to thank members of The Gap State School community for your warm welcome and friendly smiles.
We hope to see you next year!

Dedication ceremony for fallen QPS officers
Commissioner Stewart with attendees of the dedication ceremony at Toowong Cemetery
Commissioner Ian Stewart joined officers, families, and Friends of the Queensland Police Museum (FOQPM) at Toowong Cemetery on Tuesday to mark the restoration of the graves of two fallen QPS members who died over a century ago.
The two graves were that of Constable Benjamin Ebbitt and Sergeant Thomas Heaney who died as a result of severe injuries from being assaulted on duty, in unrelated incidents, when attempting to arrest offenders.
Sergeant Heaney died in 1906 in South Brisbane from assault injuries he sustained while attempting to arrest two burglars at the Norman Hotel, Woolloongabba in 1905. Constable Ebbitt died in 1894 from assault injuries he sustained when he attempted to intervene and arrest two offenders for an assault in Croydon in 1890.
Searching for the location of Sergeant Heaney’s grave in 2015 led to the chance finding of Constable Ebbitt’s neighbouring grave
